It is not easy.
There are going to be moments when you are so homesick that you find yourself regretting studying abroad. You question spending so much money on an experience that you just aren’t feeling anymore. Maybe you made a mistake?
Unlike past transformations, the unignorable pull to change isn’t being fueled by shame and self-disgust this time. As potent as they may be, they don’t align with how my healing journey has invited me to be in company with myself. Shame is not an adequate or sustainable persuasive tool. Compassion is.
You owe it to them.
“Them” as in that kid in the mirror that stared back at you every morning before school for years and made grand plans about the life they’d live and who they’d live it with.
That child made promises to themself that are up to you to fulfill. They held up their end of the bargain by daring to dream big; now, it’s your turn.
All I can do is take it day by day and not repeat the wrongs of my past. So, without further ado:
It wasn’t long before a wave of gratitude and joy settled over me. I must have looked like a crazy person to the Shanghainese people around me, smiling over nothing. But I wasn’t smiling over nothing.
Living closer to our friends awards us stronger physical, emotional, and financial wellness. There’s more readily available support for those inevitable challenging moments we all face.
Why do we accept living like this? Alone; stuck in the hamster wheel, oscillating between work and home–dreadfully unsatisfied.
I’ll admit, it feels good to type one out. It feels even better to see it get noticed and “liked” by others–it’s validating. It’s as though you’re getting the last word, the last hurrah, and everyone agrees with you.
For over 5 years now, I have been collecting my thoughts (about pretty much everything) in my Instagram story highlights and I thought it was high time that I chronicle them in some carousel galleries on my blog.
The issue comes when our country chooses to remain ignorant of its wrongs. Its behavior, in regard to education, profiteers patriotism. It distorts the truth to cultivate a false chronicle of American prowess; admitting defeat only when it led to ultimate victory. Dissent made against this model is deemed unpatriotic and, therefore, against what it means to be American. I ask, though, if what it means to be an American is to hide the truth and develop a fallacy so complex and weave it into the curricula from which our children are taught, then does that not point to an enormous vulnerability in our country’s ego?
We know what we FEEL. We know what we WANT. But, we have not NAMED it. What does a transformed policing system look like? Posts on social media all seem to be rooted in emotion, but an appeal to pathos without a goal for a logical solution leaves us without something to act on.
There is no single way to offer service; it is not always about actually feeding or clothing those in need. Instead, it can also be about inspiring others through our thoughts and actions-- it is a service to spark imagination and incite ambition.

Go everywhere you can. Learn all that you can. Experience all that you can.
Your life is yours to live.
It’s not easy to do. There’s no step-by-step guide that I, or anyone, can create for you. You must determine for yourself what your life will look like and how committed to that vision you are. From there, through small daily changes in how you engage with yourself, you’ll inch closer and closer to living fully. To living on your own terms. How beautiful is that?
It’s really about putting fear to the side, isn’t it? Requiring perfection in all that you do and letting fear dictate your actions isn’t owning your life; it’s letting life own you. Don’t choose victimhood when an alternative path, the road not taken, is available to you. Be brave. Choose to be extraordinary.
